Study Shows Key Enzyme Missing From Aggressive Form of Breast Cancer

A groundbreaking new study led by the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center's Dr. Peter Zhou found that triple-negative breast cancer cells are missing a key enzyme that other cancer cells contain ? providing insight into potential therapeutic targets to treat the aggressive cancer. Zhou's study is unique in that his lab is the only one in the country to specifically study the metabolic process of triple-negative breast cancer cells.

High-Fat Dairy Products Linked to Poorer Breast Cancer Survival

Patients who consume high-fat dairy products following breast cancer diagnosis increase their chances of dying from the disease years later, according to a study by Kaiser Permanente researchers.

New Imaging Agent Enables Better Cancer Detection, More Accurate Staging

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have shown that a new imaging dye, designed and developed at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, is an effective agent in detecting and mapping cancers that have reached the lymph nodes. The radioactive dye called Technetium Tc-99m tilmanocept, successfully identified cancerous lymph nodes and did a better job of marking cancers than the current standard dye. Results of the Phase III clinical trial were published in the journal Annals of Surgical Oncology.

"Tilmanocept is a novel engineered radiopharmaceutical specifically designed for sentinel lymph node detection," said David R. Vera, PhD, the drug's inventor, who is a professor in the UCSD Department of Radiology. "The molecule, developed at UC San Diego School of Medicine, offers surgeons a new tool to accurately detect and stage melanoma and breast cancers while in the operating room."

On March 13, 2013, tilmanocept received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.

Scientists Find Promising New Approach to Preventing Progression of Breast Cancer

Doctors currently struggle to determine whether a breast tumor is likely to shift into an aggressive, life-threatening mode?an issue with profound implications for treatment. Now a group from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) has identified a mechanism through which mitochondria, the powerhouses of a cell, control tumor aggressiveness. Based on their findings, the team developed a simple treatment that inhibits cancer progression and prolongs life when tested in mice.

  • “Doctors are only one part of the healing equation when you’re sick. Pink-Link gives breast cancer patients an easy way to meet the exact people they most want to talk to, women who have first-hand experience navigating their particular diagnosis, treatment and recovery issues.  It helps them make more informed decisions, brings them comfort, & can even speed their healing.” ~ Dr. Scott Sale, MD

  • “I hope to be in contact with members who are going through what I did. Having been through it and survived to be happy and whole again, helps me feel like helping others who are as frightened as I was. It seems to be a trait that is common to survivors.” Louise T., Trumball, Connecticut, Pink-Link member

  • “I want to say thank you for your website.  I found a girl on your website in my area that was young like me.  Because of our relationship we are now starting a support group for young breast cancer survivors in the Baton Rouge area.  It has been a real need in this area. Because of your website we have made it happen.” ~ Shannon B., Baton Rouge, LA, Pink-Link member

  • “I do so enjoy your monthly newsletter, and have referred friends who have been diagnosed with breast cancer to your webpage. I also have been fortunate enough to have been selected as a mentor and was able to help a woman in Virginia get through her treatment. We are still in touch, and I'm sure we will be for a long time.” ~ Eleanor T., Monrovia, California, Pink-Link member

  •  “Social support can be very important for breast cancer survivors as they recover from treatment. Providing access to mentors is part of Pink-Link’s mission.
