"Getting Past the Fear" of Chemotherapy

In 2008 Nancy lost her mother to breast cancer and less than two years later was diagnosed herself. Shortly after her own cancer diagnosis, she started a blog at Nancy's Point where she writes candidly about her own breast cancer experience, reconstruction, BRCA2 + status, grief/loss, pets and other topics. She also advocates for change in today's breast cancer pink ribbon culture. Bringing awareness to the under-met needs of the metastatic breast cancer community has become a primary focus as well.  When Nancy learned she would be requiring chemotherapy as part of her breast cancer treatment, she discovered there was little helpful information on how to prepare emotionally to ease her fear. This is what led her to write her own book, Getting Past the Fear:  A guide to help you mentally prepare for chemotherapy. As Nancy states on her website:

"I was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent chemotherapy.  I've been there.   I've felt the fear.

If you are facing chemotherapy for the first time, I want to help you get past your fear. If we can't talk face-to-face, reading Getting Past the Fear is the next best thing."

"Getting Past the Fear: A guide to help you mentally prepare for chemotherapy"contains practical suggestions for getting your mind in a better place before you begin treatment. Loved ones of those beginning chemo for the first time will also find it helpful. It's a quick and easy read with lots of useful advice and tips on topics such as:

The importance of acknowledging your true feelings
Tips for self-advocating
Questions to ask your oncologist
How to cope with hair loss
How to buy a wig
What the first day of chemo will be like
What to expect during chemotherapy
Taking care of relationships
Journaling
Looking forward

Don't begin chemotherapy without first reading Getting Past the Fear! Reading this book is like sitting down with for a heart-to-heart talk with a friend who's been there.  For information on how to buy Getting Past the Fear:  A guide to help you mentally prepare for chemotherapy click here. Be sure to visit Nancy's Point to read more about her breast cancer experience and more. Also, be sure to like Nancy's Point on Facebook and follow her on Twitter. Join the conversations today because as Nancy believes, sharing helps everyone.  Nancy has generously donated 5 copies of her e-book to Pink-Link members! To enter our contest, please email me with the answer to the following question: "What's the one thing you wish you would've known before you started chemotherapy?" All responses will be put in a big bowl and the 5 winners will be notified by me at the beginning of May. The winners' email addresses will be given directly to Nancy and the book will be emailed by her to the winners.

Testimonials

  • “Doctors are only one part of the healing equation when you’re sick. Pink-Link gives breast cancer patients an easy way to meet the exact people they most want to talk to, women who have first-hand experience navigating their particular diagnosis, treatment and recovery issues.  It helps them make more informed decisions, brings them comfort, & can even speed their healing.” ~ Dr. Scott Sale, MD

  • “Pink-Link's matching program allows for individualized connection and support and are a welcome and much needed service to women and families who are dealing with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Certainly a service I will recommend to those searching for support!” ~ Amy Grillo, Education & Conference Coordinator, Living Beyond Breast Cancer

  • “I hope to be in contact with members who are going through what I did. Having been through it and survived to be happy and whole again, helps me feel like helping others who are as frightened as I was. It seems to be a trait that is common to survivors.” Louise T., Trumball, Connecticut, Pink-Link member

  • “I want to say thank you for your website.  I found a girl on your website in my area that was young like me.  Because of our relationship we are now starting a support group for young breast cancer survivors in the Baton Rouge area.  It has been a real need in this area. Because of your website we have made it happen.” ~ Shannon B., Baton Rouge, LA, Pink-Link member

  • “I do so enjoy your monthly newsletter, and have referred friends who have been diagnosed with breast cancer to your webpage. I also have been fortunate enough to have been selected as a mentor and was able to help a woman in Virginia get through her treatment. We are still in touch, and I'm sure we will be for a long time.” ~ Eleanor T., Monrovia, California, Pink-Link member

  •  “Social support can be very important for breast cancer survivors as they recover from treatment. Providing access to mentors is part of Pink-Link’s mission. They connect survivors in a confidential, user-friendly manner. I’m proud to be a board member & recommend their website as an important patient resource.” ~Dr. Patricia Ganz, MD, UCLA  Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center

  • “I am grateful for Pink-Link. The interaction with other breast cancer survivors has been the best therapy. I can keep up to date with the newest developments, and more importantly, it gives me hope for the future - thanks to Pink-Link!” ~ Anna G., Warner Robins, Georgia, Pink-Link member

  • “Even when they’re healthy, women thrive on community, but this need is magnified when women are in crisis.  Pink-Link helps breast cancer patients connect to one another and to survivors in a way that can dramatically assist in their healing, both physical and emotional.” ~ Dr. Kauser Ahmed, PhD, Staff Clinician, UCLA/Ted Mann Family Resource Center
