In 2002, Nicole Johnson took
inspiration from courageous women in her life and wrote a piece, Stepping Into the Ring. Since that time, her one-woman drama
portraying the battle for hope over despair in the life of a woman facing breast cancer, has been used to
encourage thousands of survivors and those who love and support them. She’s
performed the piece for over one million women, including an audience of 40,000
in
Times Square for the opening of the 2006
Revlon Run/Walk.
In Stepping Into the Ring you’ll experience the strength and courage
of one woman through her bout with cancer. Using the metaphor of boxing, Nicole’s character takes us on a journey
through many emotions, including denial, anger and the feelings of deep
injustice, as she confronts the loss of her breast – and what feels like the
loss of her womanhood. This is a triumphant story of the fight for hope over
despair in the battle too many women face. Rosie O’Donnell called Nicole’s
piece, “nothing short of boxing lessons for your spirit!”
We invite
you to enjoy this clip of Nicole’s performance of Stepping Into the Ring – and we hope that you’ll share it with
other women facing the “heavyweight champion of the world” who need hope and
courage for the fight.
