Butterfly Kisses Book

March 28, 2007
by Ellen McVicker

In 2002, Ellen McVicker, Aurora, Colorado resident and teacher for over 20 years, wrote a story for her cousin, Nanci Hersh, a New Jersey resident who was just diagnosed with breast cancer.  The story was a gift from Ellen to help Nanci explain her recently diagnosed cancer to her two young sons.   Two years later, Nanci, an award-winning artist, agreed to illustrate Ellen's words. On October 1st, 2006, Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings – When someone you love has cancer … a hopeful, helpful book for kids was released.

Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings is a listen-to or read-along book for children who are dealing with a loved one’s cancer. The story line, as told through the eyes of a child, gives a simple and honest picture of cancer through its clear text and beautiful illustrations. Children of all ages, as well as adults, will find comfort in the words that flow through the pages of the book along the wings of the butterfly.  This book helps open the lines of communication for kids and adults, while offering constructive ways for children to get actively involved in helping their loved one, empowering them at a time when they may feel confused and powerless.

As expressed on the UrbanBaby.com website, “Thankfully, there's a lot of fundraising for cancer these days. But all the pink ribbons in the world can't help a mother and child face these tough conversations. By offering a supportive context and reassuring words, Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings – When someone you love has cancer … a hopeful, helpful book for kids  helps fill this need, benefiting cancer patients as much as their kids … hopeful and helpful indeed.”

Along with the book, Ellen McVicker and Nanci Hersh have designed a website filled with additional resources for children and adults.  Included on their site is everything from coloring sheets and journaling pages, to other websites that delicately handle the issue of telling a child about a loved one’s cancer.  For more information, or to order their book (retails for $16.95), please log on to their website at www.butterflykissesbook.com or call them at (303)955-5115.
