Seeking Warrior Words of Wisdom

March 18, 2010
by Judith Melchreit

Hi Girlfriends!

My name is Judith, and this year I will mark 10 years as a breast cancer survivor (insert round of applause here~ Whoo Whoo!)   When my treatment was completed in 2001, my friends and I decided to write a sort of “How to help a friend have cancer” manual to share all we learned during my journey with other “Pink Ribbon Warriors” and their friends. We combined this story along with all our favorite recipes and in February 2002, we formed “Team Towanda” to launch “The Charge of the Casserole Cavalry: The Official Towanda Cookbook.”  All proceeds were designated to assist women who are unable to afford breast health care. Our goal was to raise about $1000 and fund a few mammograms.  To our utter amazement, in the last eight years, over fifteen thousand copies of our book have been sold or donated.  Team Towanda Foundation has donated over $200,000 to fund mammograms, breast related services, outreach and educational projects to women in need in the Greater Hartford, CT area.  This all-volunteer non profit group is run from my dining room table and remains committed to the underserved, uninsured women in our community. We are excited to announce that TTF is writing a new cookbook: “Towanda Celebrates with her Bosom Buddies. It will be a follow up to our original cookbook and will feature the very best recipes that gal pals use when it is time to par-tay for whatever the reason!

This book will also include updated “Notes to Girlfriends” for friends of women facing a challenge, and more “Warrior to Warrior Words of Wisdom” from women who have “been there, done that”, as well as “Inspirational Quotes, Jokes & Stories” to help lift everyone’s spirits. We hope to solicit stories, anecdotes, and lessons learned from women who realized the power of friendship, laughter, and kindness when faced with the fight of their lives. We want ideas, suggestions, jokes, whatever you’ve got that might make the fight even a tiny bit easier for others.

We definitely want the new book to have the richness that comes from contributions from as many women as possible. Please, please, please be a part of this!

Okay, so here’s what you need to know:

Submitting stuff:

We’ve made submitting recipes, notes, and other items to share REALLY easy for you on the Team Towanda Foundation Website. You just click, enter, and Zap!   You’re good to go! You can use this link http://www.teamtowanda.org/cbsubmissions.html, or go to www.teamtowanda.org, select the menu item “Get Involved” and then select “Help Us Write a New Cookbook.”

IMPORTANT!  Deadline is APRIL 5, 2010 Yeah, like in a couple of weeks.

This is not a lot of time, so you need to get to it QUICKLY if you want to be included.  In order for us to have this printed by October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we need to work at “company’s due in 20 min and I just got out of the shower” speed. You know what we’re talking about.

We are seeking recipes for everything from soup to nuts, including drinks.  We want decadent & we want healthy. We want easy-peasy & we want “once a year because it’s a pain/expensive but everyone loves it”.   We want food for glam and glitz & for jammies and comfort. If you want to include a little note about why you picked this particular recipe, let’s hear it! That kind of personal touch is what makes a Towanda cookbook not “just another cookbook”.  As with the first book, our goal is to nourish body, mind, and soul as we celebrate Life & Friends and all the blessings that flow from both.

We can’t wait to hear from Bosom Buddies far and wide!  Please help us gather as many recipes and notes to our friends as quickly as possible.  Please cut and paste this note into an email to all your friends, especially any “Pink Ribbon Warriors” you know.

“Girlfriends are like bras, close to the heart and always there for support!”

Breast regards!
Judith

Early detection saves lives. Really. Now go schedule your mammogram and then call your best friend and make sure she schedules one, too!
