BreastReconstruction.org
January 6, 2008
by Beth Silverman
What happens when two renowned plastic surgeons recently
honored by the American Cancer Society as the 2007 Physicians of Distinction,
cross paths with Beth Silverman, a passionate young survivor that dreams of
making a difference in the fight against breast cancer? “Something magical,”
says Beth, the executive director for the newly launched web resource www.BreastReconstruction.org. “During my own cancer journey, I struggled
with decisions about reconstruction. I had a hard time finding the information
I needed, and was frightened by images I found on various websites. As an
active member of the cancer community, I came across hundreds of women
experiencing the same confusion and frustration. I knew something had to be done, so I reached
out to two surgeons whose dedication to breast reconstruction goes far beyond
their surgical practice.”
After a
year of development, BreastReconstruction.org opened its cyber doors to the
world in October. Their mission is to
offer a comprehensive website for women making decisions about reconstruction,
while providing the most up-to-date information on surgical advances, and a
safe environment where women can connect with each other. Covering a broad range of reconstruction
topics, the site covers everything from types of reconstruction, to tips on
preparing for surgery. Users can find
the latest information in the research news section, or share the experience
and photos of other women in the personal stories section. The site offers discussion boards, and in
early 2008 live chats will be held monthly.
BreastReconstruction.org
is just getting started. The future
holds exciting additions for the website. Look for their booth in February at the YSC/LBBC conference, or email support@breastreconstruction.org
for brochures and other information.
